Cleft Lip and Palate...
Now for a little serious note. Many people getting put onto the special needs lists of their agencies and are asking for special needs children that have needs that are not physically noticeable, such as VSD. Well, we are here to tell you that there is nothing wrong with a child with cleft lip and/or palate. Some famous people have cleft lip, like Joaquin Phoenix. Wikipedia has a great article on cleft lip and palate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleft_palate. I highly recommend everyone read this article.
China categorizes the severity of the cleft by degree: first degree cleft (incomplete cleft lip/palate), second degree cleft (unilateral cleft) and third degree cleft (bilateral cleft). Third degree, which is what Sawyer has, is the most severe. While severe, cleft lip/palate are very correctable. We see time and time again that these children are the last ones chosen from the lists. We see postings on APC, cleft adopt, etc... about these children needing to find families before their files go back to the CCAA. Please do not bypass these children because their special need can be seen on the outside, inside they have a heart full of love and joy to give to you and your family.
Here is the story behind Sawyer. We were reading the APC boards and a couple other ones when Shelby got this e-mail. The title of the e-mail, Tyler needs a home before his file gets sent back to CCAA. Shelby e-mailed me the e-mail and asked what I thought. The first thing I said when I saw his picture was, "WOW, how do we get our son home." I didn't even notice that he had a cleft lip and palate. I just knew that he was our son and he needed to be a part of our family. On April 20th, 2006, we sent in our LOI to CCAA. On July 17th, 2006 we got our TA and on July 21st, 2006, we were on our way to bring Sawyer home. Finally, three months ago, today, we had Sawyer in our arms for the first time.
Ever since July 24th, 2006, our lives have filled with happiness, wonder of the unknown and excitement. Sawyer's personality is blossoming more than I could ever imagine. I am, we are, very lucky to have him as our son. He will have surgery on November 7th to fix his cleft palate. Three months from then, he will have a lip revision done to connect muscles in his lip. While the doctors in China did an excellent job on his first lip revision, they did not properly connect some of his muscles in his lip, most likely, because of his size at the time of the surgery.
Fear of the unknown can be very scary, but if you do your research, the unknown can be an exciting challenge that can be overcome. Please, everyone, do your research on the different special needs from VSD, club foot, missing limb/digit, cleft lip/palate, etc..., you might be surprised at what you and your family can handle.
Have a great day.

Oh What A Weekend....
This weekend, we joined up with other families that have adopted children from Kunming and went to the Fall Harvest at Remlinger Farms in Carnation, WA. But, on the way up there, Sawyer had his first "incident" with us. Ya see our plan was to go up there and take our Family Photo for the holidays. So Shelby went out and bought us all real nice outfits to wear. Well, on the way up to Remlinger Farms, poor little guy had an upset stomach and he threw up all over his new cloths. What a horrible smell. So we decided to go to Fred Meyer (it's like a super Target) and get him a new outfit and something for his belly. Well while Mommy ran into the store, Daddy had to put something on the boy to keep him warm.
If you can not tell, after his "incident," he was feeling fine. So on we went to to the Fall Harvest.
While we had a nice time seeing all the little ones, we mostly hung out with our favorite neighbors, Mike, Nancy and Melanie.
Sawyer's earlier "incident" really didn't bother him at all through out the day. We know this because he would not stop eating the Kettle Corn.
Sawyer really enjoyed going on the train ride, eventhough he didn't know what to think while we were going through the tunnel.
He also enjoy riding on Mama's shoulders and riding the rides with Baba, Mike and Melanie.
Trust me Mommy and Sawyer were having fun. We had a fun time at the Farm and any time we can spend time with Mike, Nancy and Melanie, is a great time. Enjoy these pictures.
By the way, we never did get that family picture.

Funny Little Man....
So, after yesterday's serious post, I thought I would do some ramblings, mainly about my son.
Every day is an adventure when you are a new dad. Last night, Sawyer was playing in his room. He loves to push buttons on his little musical piano, listen to it play a song while taking apart or beating the crap out of one of his wood toys. So, I had this marvelous idea of getting a radio in his room so he could listen to music while we 'play' with his toys. It works out well, as long as you are in his room with him, but once you have to go answer the phone, make dinner, or clean the house, he is back to his old tricks of beating the crap out of wood toys while listening to the radio and the song off of his musical piano. I am sure it's fun for him and it is very funny for us.
Kids are funny. Sawyer is funny. Sometimes I am not sure what is more entertaining, watching the NLCS on TV or watching Sawyer run around the house chasing the dogs so he can pull their tails, or ears, or anything else he can get his hands on. Lets look at this a little closer: while watching the NCLS, you can do your chores early in the game and come back at the end of the game and not really miss anything. But if you got distracted by life's daily duties while watching your child, you never know what you could find. You could find that your child has found the stash of magic markers and redesigned the paint job on your living room wall, including the expensive art work (has not happened, yet). You could find that your child has decided to play hide and go seek, with himself, and lock himself in the bathroom (has happened). He may decide to use the door of the dishwasher as his personal diving board, or step stool to look (dive) into the trash can (hasn't happened yet, but he has crawled onto the dishwasher door). Or, my favorite, he could use the toilet bowl as his personal wishing well.
You never can truly imagine what a child can get into a toilet bowl until you see it first hand. I haven't yet, but I have heard horror stories. Sawyer hasn't figure out that he can put stuff in the toilet, yet, but he does go and splash the water around. I find this a little funny because he will not splash the water in the bathtub, but he has no problem splashing the water in the toilet. There has been a few times where I have walked in on him when he has been elbow deep in the toilet. I think I am going to start giving him a toilet bowl cleaner, that way he can have fun and clean the bowl at the same time. Ah yes, his first chore.
Well, I had better go now, I think Sawyer decided to play hide and seek with himself again. Later...

Life's a Dance....
You learn as you go. Well, I (we) have learned a lot over the last year by going through the process of adopting Sawyer. Some of it I wish I could forget like a bad dream, but I cherish most of the experiences I (we) have endured to bring Sawyer home. My advise to anyone who is going to adopt a child from a foreign country would be to do your research. Find the agency that best fits your needs. We didn't at first but, let me tell you Small World Adoption Programs http://www.swa.net/, out of Spokane, WA., was AWESOME. Kathy and her staff are very accommodating to the needs of the families. You can call and ask them a question and they will respond to you in a kind and caring manner. We can not say enough good things about this agency. We highly recommend them.
On the other hand, there is an agency in Seattle which is not very caring about there clients. The owner of the company is a jerk. Let's call him Blave. I call it a company and not agency because the owners are only in for the money. I won't mention the companies name, but the following phase has their initial in it: Aardvarks Are Orycteropus afer. They are very rude to you when you call, do not follow through when you ask them a question and they could care less to give their clients any type of updates or helpful information. They also will change their agency rules without notifying their clients. In our case, two days before we were to leave for China, they told us that we would have to pre-pay the post-placement adoption fees before we leave. When we told them we would pay them when we get back, they threatened to call the CCAA and tell them that we were not in good standing with them anymore and would interrupt our adoption of Sawyer. Then they told Shelby to "pull out her little credit card and make the payment."
Blave is the worst of them all. He will tell you one thing to your face then say or do something different on their message board. For instance, he said that he would outline the new waiting child program for their company in a group posting on the Yahoo message board. Instead, he gave a long dissertation about his son and how he was not on the special needs list and blah, blah, blah...Anyway, his posting had nothing to do with the special needs program that they were developing. The posting ended with the phrase "more to come..." Well, the "more to come..." never came. I would not recommend this company to anyone. They are the worst people on earth to deal with when you are adopting from China. They give you absolutely no support and are very unfriendly. When we called to find out if they had faxed our LOI (Letter Of Intent) to China, the person on the other end said, "well, aren't grateful for what we are doing for you?" How unprofessional can they be? Never again.
We will be going through SWA for Sawyer's little brother or sister. Hopefully sometime next summer/fall. Keep watching to find out.

Random Thoughts is a no go.....
I thought I would create another blog, but it didn't work out very well, so that I can just ramble on about anything, just like the earlier Journey to Sawyer blog. That was a lot of fun. So, look forward to mindless, misguided, sometimes unintelligible babblings of yours truly.

Any coping of this material, without the express written consent of this man, Major League Baseball, the NFL, the NHL, or anybody else the man can think of, is strictly prohibited. Unless you print out a copy and hand it out to your friends, family, enemies, or any random person walking by on the streets. Well, I guess, you can e-mail a copy of this or send the link to your friends, family, or enemies, but it still will be hard to send a link to the guy walking down the street unless they have one of those palm pilots that has e-mail.
When the subject contains sarcasm: if you get a laugh out of this site, great!!! If you don't, then you don't understand my sick sense of humor.
When the subject is of a serious nature: please be serious when you comment or try to liven it us with a little sarcasm.
Whatever you do, sit back and have fun.

Finding Fun....
Do you remember when you were a kid and you could find fun in any situation? I don't, but Sawyer is reminding us daily that it's good to be a kid. Kids have the most amazing imaginations. The can think of very creative ways to entertain themselves. Sawyer will now go into his room and dump all of his toys out of the clear plastic containers. Then he will take that clear plastic container and put it up in front of his face. Then he will walk around the house looking through the clear plastic container like it was a windshield.
More was to be had over the weekend. We went up to the mountains to a Bavarian Village called Leavenworth. For those of you who know Colorado, it was sort of like Estes Park. Sawyer loved walking around the town and exploring new things. Of course he liked the toy shop, but he loved the Christmas shop with all the lights. We happened to find him a Christmas Stocking that matched mine and Shelby's perfectly, except it is five times the size of ours.
Sawyer is an incredible little child. So, I was inspired by him to create a second blog for fun thoughts and ramblings. Check it out: http://randomthoughtsnewdad.blogspot.com/.
Message from Sawyer: Enjoy Life and have fun!!! I now leave you with more pictures of the Star of the Show.

Sawyer is the Man...
Every day we are totally amazed with the progress that Sawyer is making. Every day I come home from work it seems like I come home to a new kid. He is opening up more and more every day. He is laughing more, running more, investigating more and testing our boundaries more. He is letting me play with him more, letting me put him to sleep at night, wanting me to throw him up in the air and swing him around more and more. He now doesn't just run over to mommy when he has a boo boo. It an amazing process to watch you child grow up and attach to you in such a short little time. He is truly the little man of the house!!
UPDATE: Cleft Surgery Scheduled....
Sawyer is scheduled for surgery on the 7th of November to repair his cleft palate. Three months after this surgery, he will need to have a lip revision done to connect muscles in his upper lip which were not connected properly in China. But, we (you) would never of known that by looking at this precious little boy's smile.
Meeting New Friends...
Sawyer has been busy since he has been back in meeting new friends. You have seen him with Melanie, our AWESOME neighbors' daughter from down the street. Last weekend we went to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle to meet our friends Mark and Lori, and their beautiful daughter McKaden. McKaden is only three day older than Sawyer and a wonderful little girl. They had a great time together looking at the animal and playing with the rails around the exhibits. What a fun day.
We can not leave out our good friends and Sawyer's God Parents Holly and Chip. Sawyer loves the attention they give him and the adventure they took him on at the beach. What a wonderful couple.
Friend's in Kunming Now...
Mr and Mrs D are in Kunming as we speak http://wunschmachen.blogspot.com/ The are now spending time with their little man Charlie and enjoying seeing the sights of one of the most beautiful areas in all of China. We are very jealous and wish we could take Sawyer back to his home town to immerse him more in the Kunming culture. http://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/kunming.htm
Thank Yous...
To our families: Thank you for the support and love you all have given us throughout our Journey to Sawyer and now Sawyer's Journey. Sawyer loves all the toys and gift you have given him. He plays with them all the time.
Mark and Lori: Thank you for the prayers and support in our journey. It was a very special moment for us when you finally got to meet Sawyer. The look of happiness in your eyes was very heart warming and we look forward for many more "dates" for Sawyer and McKaden.
Then there is Mike and Nancy. We can not say enough good things about them and the advise they gave us when we went to Kunming. They are a very wonderful couple and AWESOME neighbors (did I already say that, well if I did, it needs to be repeated).
Finally, Chip and Holly: We can not thank you enough for listening to our frustrations, sadness and then overwhelming joy through out this entire ordeal. You are great friends and we are very proud to have you as part of our family.
With Love

The Things Kids Get Into....
We all have been kids at one time in our lives, but as we get older we tend to forget what it was like to be a young one. So, that is why God invented children. They remind us of the disgusting things we did when we were children. Like the famous picking of the nose then eating it. This was not staged, the pictures have not been altered in any way, this actually happened.
Then they go and do something completely random. Sawyer and I were home while Mommy was at work. Sawyer was running all over the house while I was trying to do the dishes. I went into the bedroom to get some water cups and I came out to this:
I couldn't help but to bust a gut laughing my butt off.
Then it's off to Sawyer favorite activity before bed. Bath Time. Yes, that right, Sawyer loves baths. I know when I was a kid, I hated baths, but Sawyer loves splashing in the water. He favorite bath thing is to grab on the side of the tub, then stand up and sit down to make big waves. Too cute...
Then there is the most peaceful time of all...
Have a good night...
